I know I should love Linux and know all about it by now, but I dont.Im just not proficient with the administration part, I still dont know in which folder the programs are installed on Linux.
I function on another level of abstraction and I dont want to know all the implementation details. Having a Linux on a virtual machine seemed to me somewhat cumbersome, but fortunately, theres a more elegant solution. It doesnt really emulate Linux, but it instead provides substantial Linux API functionality. That should be it. So, lets install Cygwin first, then well install an MPI implementation and see if it all works. Openmp Cygwin Download A SmallYou download a small setup.exe from the Cygwin site which helps you select the needed components. It will offer you c:cygwin as the default one, but I dont like programs making themselves too comfortable with my root. So I put it in c:ToolsCygwin, because no spaces are allowed in Linux paths ( dont use c:Program Files ). You will have to add some by clicking on Skip and changing it to the version you want to install. Some of the following are also required, but I dont know exactly which ones. You may experiment (you can also install components later by running setup.exe again), or you can just select all of the following, it wont hurt. The next ones are not required, but they will be of help sooner or later. A short research shows that there are several implementations around, with the two most popular ones: MPICH and Open MPI. You can search yourself and see which one suits you better, my gutfeeling led me towards MPICH. On the contrary, OpenMP is an API a for shared memory machines, while Open MPI implements Message Passing Interface on distributed memory systems. The former is also termed parallel computing, and the letter distributed computing, though this distinction is not that clear. You can download it through a browser and put it in the (in my case) c:ToolsCygwinusrlocalbin or, you may open the Cygwin console and work as you would on Linux (if you installed wget from the previous list): cd usrlocalbin. This is the point where I lost a day and a half and decided to lose some more on writing this walkthrough. Theres no mpd, so something must have gone wrong with the installation Over and over again. Till you find out that it is no longer used since some version (1.2 or something).
